R&D 2004 Lab of the Year High Honors
The award winning Broad Center is Caltech's first building of the 21st century and marks a significant aesthetic change from the Universities Italian Renaissance style prevalent since the 1920s. It sits near a previous Lab of the Year winner by Kewaunee, the Beckman Center. The Broad Center's Travertine marble exterior blends well with the design of both the exterior and interiors. The Broad Center was designed as a flexible academic facility, accommodating a wide array of Biological research fields. Concentrating on structural biology, circuitry of the brain, computational biology, and experimental MRI and electron microscopy. All the laboratory spaces feature Contemporary Full Overlay Clear Maple which is quite a change from their previous labs of traditional radius lip casework with dark stains. Caltech certainly met their goal to provide a safe, high-tech work environment that would attract highly qualified employees. | |
